History: The history of Atlanta dates back to 1836, when Georgia decided to build a railroad to the U.S. Midwest and a location was chosen to be the line’s terminus. The stake marking the founding of “Terminus” was driven into the ground in 1837. The city was later renamed Marthasville, then Atlanta. Between 1845 and 1854, rail lines arrived from four different directions, and the rapidly growing town quickly became the rail hub for the entire Southern United States. During the Civil War, Union General William Sherman’s troops set fire and destroyed the city, save churches and hospitals. The city rebuilt and became the state capital in 1868.

Community: Atlanta is a major center for business, education, and culture. The city is home to the largest consortium of Black colleges and universities in the nation, including Spelman College, Morehouse College, and Clark Atlanta University. Atlanta played a vital role in the Civil Rights Movement and continues to be a diverse, thriving metropolis known for its innovation, hospitality, and economic opportunity.
