History: The area was originally inhabited by both the Cherokee and Muscogee Creek until the Battle of Taliwa in 1755, which ended with a Cherokee victory. Ball Ground gets its name from the fields that Cherokee natives would use to play games like stickball. Following the Indian Removal Act of 1830, white settlers first arrived in 1835. Ball Ground did not come into existence as a town until the railroad passed through it in 1882 when the Louisville & Nashville Railroad extended their rail line and decided to build a depot. Landowners donated land for the townsite, and the town was incorporated on January 1, 1883, with a population of 297. The marble-working industry became Ball Ground’s main industry, with three sizeable companies—Consumers Monument Company, Roberts Marble Company, and Ball Ground Monument Company—processing marble quarried at Tate, Georgia.

Community: Ball Ground’s population tripled from 730 in 2000 to 2,560 in 2020, making it one of the fastest-growing communities in Cherokee County with a population growth of 290% since 2000. The median household income is $112,585, and the city maintains its historic character with many homes built during the 1880s-1920s. In 2009, the Ball Ground Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its significance to Native American and early national history. The Alfred W. Roberts House (1855) is the only house in Cherokee County with NRHP recognition. Today, Ball Ground features a charming historic main street lined with unique shops and restaurants, and is home to Universal Alloy Corporation, one of Cherokee County’s largest employers with over 500 workers.
