History: Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the site where Canton would be founded lay in the heart of the original Cherokee Nation. Following the Georgia Gold Rush in 1829, European-American settlers moved into the area. The new settlers chose a site for a permanent county seat and courthouse in 1833, naming it “Etowah”. The name was changed to “Cherokee Courthouse” in 1833. In 1834 it was changed to “Canton”, after the Chinese city of Guangzhou, because citizens hoped to make the Georgia town a center of the silk industry. During the American Civil War, Canton was burned between November 1 and 5, 1864, by the Union Army under the command of Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman. Canton Cotton Mills, which produced the famous “Canton Denim,” became one of the largest mills in the South before closing in 1981.

Community: Canton has experienced tremendous growth as Atlanta’s suburbs have expanded northward, with the population nearly tripling between 2000 and 2010. The city maintains its historic downtown character featuring Victorian-era buildings, the Canton Theatre, and the Mill on Etowah. The Etowah River flows through the center of the city, providing recreational opportunities. Canton offers residents a blend of small-town charm, rich history, and convenient access to Atlanta via I-575.
