History: Decatur was established at the intersection of two Native American trails: the Sandtown, which led east from the Chattahoochee River at Utoy Creek, and the Shallowford. In 1822, a spot was chosen for the DeKalb County courthouse, and Decatur was incorporated as a city by the General Assembly on Dec. 10, 1823. The city was named after U.S. naval hero Stephen Decatur. When the Western and Atlantic Railroad wanted to make Decatur a major stop on its line in the early 1830s, the people of Decatur didn’t want all that would accompany the rail line and vetoed the proposal. The stop was moved about 7 miles down the road to a small area called Terminus, which later became Marthasville, then Atlanta. During the American Civil War, Decatur became a strategic site in Sherman’s Atlanta campaign. In July 1864, Major-General James McPherson occupied the town to cut off the Confederates’ supply line from Augusta.

Community: While Atlanta grew into one of America’s largest cities, Decatur retained its small-town character. The city has experienced significant revitalization, with downtown Decatur becoming a thriving destination known for shops, restaurants, and three MARTA rail stations providing easy access to Atlanta. Decatur is recognized as a progressive, highly educated community (74% of residents hold a bachelor’s degree or higher) with excellent schools, historic neighborhoods like Oakhurst and Druid Hills, and a vibrant arts and festival scene. The city is known for walkability, with PATH Foundation trails throughout.
