History: Originally part of Cherokee territory, the area was opened to white settlers in 1818 following the creation of Gwinnett County. Evan Howell, a cotton merchant, established the first permanent settlement in 1821 near the Chattahoochee River at what became known as Howell’s Cross Roads. Howell’s Crossing was renamed “Duluth” in 1871 after Congress funded a north-south railroad line into the community. The town was named after Duluth, Minnesota, reportedly as a tongue-in-cheek reference after a congressman had mocked Minnesota’s railroad project. In 1922, Duluth elected Georgia’s first female mayor, Alice Harrell Strickland, who donated land for a “community forest” and began conservation efforts.

Community: Duluth grew rapidly in the 1970s and 1980s, along with the rest of Gwinnett County. The city underwent a major downtown revitalization in the early 21st century, transforming Main Street into a vibrant destination with shops, restaurants, public art, and historic architecture. Today, Duluth is one of Metro Atlanta’s most diverse cities, particularly known for its thriving Asian-American community and Korean cultural influence. The city is home to the Southeastern Railway Museum (Georgia’s official transportation museum), Gas South Arena, and hosts an annual Fall Festival each September.
