History: The Dunwoody area was established in the early 1830s following land lotteries that distributed former Cherokee territory. The area is named for Major Charles Dunwody (1828–1905), with an extra “o” added due to a spelling error on a banking note. In 1881, the Roswell Railroad opened and ran along what is now Chamblee-Dunwoody Road north to the Chattahoochee River. In 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt made a campaign whistle stop in Dunwoody on his way to Roswell. The railroad operated for 40 years, shutting down in 1921.

Community: Dunwoody remained rural until suburban residential development was initiated in the 1960s. The construction of Interstate 285 in 1969 and Perimeter Mall in 1971 changed demographics drastically, growing the city nearly three times over. After years of community organizing, Dunwoody was officially incorporated as a city on December 1, 2008, when residents approved a referendum with 81% voting in favor. Today, Dunwoody is home to the Ebenezer Primitive Baptist Church (built 1829, Dunwoody’s oldest building), Brook Run Park with 103 acres of trails, and a thriving Perimeter Center business district.
