History: Established as “Mule Camp Springs” by European-American settlers in the early 1800s, the settlement was located at the juncture of two Indian trails. Less than three years after the organization of Hall County on December 15, 1818, Mule Camp Springs was renamed “Gainesville” on April 21, 1821, in honor of General Edmund P. Gaines, a hero of the War of 1812 and noted military surveyor. With the discovery of gold near Dahlonega in 1828, Gainesville became the trading and supply center for North America’s first gold rush.

Community: Following World War II, businessman Jesse Jewell started the poultry industry, making chickens the biggest farm crop in Georgia and earning Gainesville its “Poultry Capital of the World” nickname. In 1957, Lake Sidney Lanier was created when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built Buford Dam on the Chattahoochee River, covering over 38,000 acres. Gainesville hosted the rowing and kayaking venue for the 1996 Summer Olympics, earning the nickname “Hospitality Capital of the World” from an NBC broadcaster. Today, Gainesville is a medical, judicial, and financial hub for northeast Georgia, home to Brenau University, University of North Georgia, and numerous cultural institutions.
