History: In the early 19th century, the Johns Creek area was dotted with trading posts along the Chattahoochee River in what was then Cherokee territory. By 1820, the community of Sheltonville (or Shakerag) was a ferry crossing site, with McGinnis Ferry and Rogers Ferry carrying people and livestock across the river. Pioneer families—Rogers, McGinnis, Findley, Buice, Cowart, Medlock—gathered at these crossroads communities to visit and sell their crops. In 1981, Georgia Tech graduates bought 1,700 acres of farmland near McGinnis Ferry and Medlock Bridge Roads for a high-tech office park. They named it “Technology Park/Johns Creek”—the first reference to Johns Creek as a place.

Community: The area grew to become home to 200 companies, many Fortune 500 firms, with nearly 11,000 people. By 2000, a grassroots movement to incorporate Johns Creek into a city was developing, and voters approved incorporation in mid-2006. Johns Creek is now Georgia’s 10th largest city, ranked #2 safest city in America in 2024 by Safewise.com. The city is highly diverse, with 25% international population primarily from India, China, and South Korea. Newtown Elementary School, built in 1929, is Johns Creek’s only National Register listing.
