History: The name “Kennesaw” is derived from the Cherokee word Ganisahv, meaning ‘cemetery’ or ‘burial ground’. As the Western and Atlantic Railroad was being built in the late 1830s, shanty towns arose to house workers. Known as Big Shanty until 1887, the settlement was renamed Kennesaw under an 1887 charter. On April 12, 1862, Kennesaw was the staging ground for the Great Locomotive Chase during the Civil War, when Union spies stole the locomotive “The General” at Big Shanty. On June 6, 1864, Big Shanty fell to Sherman’s troops and became a supply base, hospital, and headquarters for Union forces.

Community: Today, Kennesaw is home to Kennesaw State University, an R2 research institution and the third-largest public university in Georgia. The city hosts the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History, part of the Smithsonian Affiliates program. Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park offers 18 miles of nature trails and historic Civil War battle sites. Every April, the Big Shanty Festival draws over 60,000 people with 200+ arts and crafts booths. The city has experienced steady growth, with population increasing over 60% since 2000.
