History: Lawrenceville was incorporated by the Georgia General Assembly on December 15, 1821, exactly three years after Gwinnett County was formed. The city is named after Commodore James Lawrence, commander of the frigate Chesapeake during the War of 1812, famous for his dying command “Don’t give up the ship!” In 1821, a permanent site for the county courthouse was selected and purchased, and the first brick courthouse was built in 1823-1824. The Lawrenceville Manufacturing Company, one of the first cotton factories, made goods for the Confederacy and burned during the Civil War before being rebuilt.

Community: In the late 1800s, a railroad was constructed that moved people and freight to the eastern seaboard, establishing Lawrenceville as a valuable transportation hub. The city grew slowly until the 1970s, when Atlanta’s growth boom spurred rapid development in Gwinnett County. Population nearly doubled from 8,928 in 1980 to 17,250 by 1990. Today, Lawrenceville features a revitalized historic downtown with the Gwinnett Historic Courthouse (1885), Gwinnett History Museum, and Aurora Theatre. Georgia Gwinnett College opened in 2006 as the nation’s first four-year public college created in the 21st century.
