History: The city of Lilburn was founded in 1890 by the Seaboard Air Line Railway. The area previously known as “McDaniel” was renamed “Lilburn” after the general superintendent of the railroad, Lilburn Trigg Myers of Virginia. The town was incorporated as Lilburn on July 27, 1910. A devastating fire and hard economic times in the 1920s ended the prosperity, followed by the boll weevil destroying cotton crops and the Great Depression, which caused the town government to cease operations. The need for a water line in 1955 created the need to reestablish a new city government.

Community: Lilburn has undergone significant revitalization, with the historic Old Town district now featuring shopping and restaurants described as a “slice of history.” The railroad still runs hourly through Old Town. The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir Atlanta is located in Lilburn, approximately two miles southwest of the city center, and is the tallest building in the city. A new City Hall/Library was completed in 2016, along with a realigned Main Street. The city hosts annual events including Lilburn Daze (arts and crafts festival), Spark in the Park (4th of July celebration), and the Christmas Parade. Lilburn is highly diverse, with 33.4% foreign-born population.
