History: Homes were built by early settlers before 1824 near Big Shanty (now Kennesaw). The first plot was laid out in 1833. The Georgia General Assembly legally recognized the community on December 19, 1834. The city is believed to be named for Mary Cobb, wife of U.S. Senator Thomas Willis Cobb, for whom the county is named. Built in 1838, Oakton House is the oldest continuously occupied residence in Marietta. Because of its mild climate and natural spring water, the town became a favorite destination for aristocratic visitors from coastal Georgia and South Carolina during summer months.

Community: The city includes the Kennesaw House, one of only four commercial buildings in Marietta not burned during Sherman’s March to the Sea, now home to the Marietta History Center. In 1942, Bell Aircraft opened a Marietta plant to manufacture B-29 bombers, and Dobbins Air Force Base was founded. In 1951, Lockheed Corporation reopened the facility and designed the C-130 Hercules transport plane. Today, Marietta features six historic districts, the famous “Big Chicken” landmark, Theatre in the Square, and a thriving downtown square with shops and restaurants.
