History: The lands of what is now Milton were once the domain of the Cherokee Nation, whose presence in Georgia dates back over 10,000 years. Following Cherokee removal, Georgia implemented a land lottery system, with the final lottery in 1832 involving the territory that would become Milton. In 1857, Milton County was established from parts of Cherokee, Forsyth, and Cobb counties, with a population of less than 4,000. The county was named after John Milton, Georgia’s first Secretary of State and Revolutionary War hero. However, boll weevil infestations, droughts, and the Great Depression destroyed the county’s cotton-based economy. On January 1, 1932, a nearly destitute Milton County was merged into Fulton County.

Community: In 2006, residents voted to create the City of Milton out of unincorporated northwest Fulton County. Over 85 percent of voters approved the referendum, and on December 1, 2006, Milton officially became a city. With over 39 square miles of land, much of it agriculturally zoned requiring minimum one-acre parcels, Milton has retained its rural and equestrian heritage. The city is one of the wealthiest in Georgia, known for excellent schools, low crime rates, and among the state’s highest rates of educational attainment (96.4% with high school degrees, 70.9% with bachelor’s degrees).
