History: Roswell King, a Connecticut-born industrialist in his seventies, founded the town in the late 1830s after recognizing the water power potential of Vickery Creek along the Chattahoochee River. He established the Roswell Manufacturing Company textile mills and brought wealthy coastal Georgia families to join his enterprise, transforming the area’s economy. The city was officially incorporated on February 16, 1854, becoming one of the largest cotton mills in North Georgia. During the Civil War, Union soldiers occupied Roswell in July 1864, and General Sherman ordered the mills burned, though much of the town’s historic architecture survived due to the military occupation.
