History: By the late 1830s, Smyrna Camp Ground became a popular religious encampment and travel destination throughout Georgia, named after the ancient Biblical city of Smyrna. After the Western and Atlantic Railroad was completed in 1842, the area began significant growth under various names including Varner’s Station and Ruff’s Station before being incorporated as Smyrna in 1872. Two Civil War battles occurred here on July 4, 1864—the Battle of Smyrna Camp Ground and the Battle of Ruff’s Mill—with Sherman’s troops burning local businesses, homes, and the 1849 covered bridge (since rebuilt and still in use). Post-WWII growth accelerated when Lockheed reopened the former Bell Bomber plant in 1951, spurring the population to jump from 2,005 in 1950 to nearly 20,000 by 1970.

Community: Modern Smyrna is known for its revitalized downtown Market Village featuring a community center, 28,000-square-foot public library, mixed retail and residential districts modeled after early 1900s city villages, and a fountain-centered square hosting concerts and festivals.
