History: Sugar Hill was officially incorporated on March 24, 1939 through a charter by the Georgia state assembly and was renamed from the Town of Sugar Hill to the City of Sugar Hill in 1975. Before incorporation, the area was part of a route from the railroad in Buford to the city of Cumming. According to local tradition, the town was named after an incident where a large shipment of sugar spilled, and the area became known as “the hill where the sugar spilled” or “the sugar hill.” An alternative theory connects the name to the city’s gold mining past, where pulverized quartz from local mines resembled sugar crystals.

Community: Sugar Hill has experienced explosive growth, with the population increasing 120% since 2000, growing from around 11,000 to over 25,000 residents. After the 2000 census, the city’s growth ranked 75th out of the 100 highest-growing cities in the nation and one of the 20 fastest-growing in Georgia. The median household income is $99,479, and the city features excellent schools, including Sugar Hill Elementary, Lanier Middle School, and Lanier High School. A new city hall opened in January 2013 to accommodate the city’s rapid population increase.
