History: Suwanee, like many Georgia towns, has its roots as a Native American village that thrived along the Chattahoochee River. The city was officially recognized by the U.S. government in 1837 with the establishment of a post office. With the construction of the Georgia Air Line Railroad in 1871 and the Rhodes House hotel in 1880 to accommodate railroad passengers, Suwanee saw an influx of people and a boost in economic activity. Although a devastating fire in 1881 spared only one building on Main Street, the town persevered. The city was officially incorporated on February 25, 1949, when the population was about 350 and the area covered roughly 3.1 square miles.

Community: Suwanee has experienced tremendous growth, with the population increasing from 615 in 1970 to over 20,000 today—growing 128% since 2000. The city now encompasses 10.8 square miles with a median household income exceeding $105,000. In 2003, Suwanee was named a City of Excellence by the Georgia Municipal Association and Trend Magazine. The city is home to Town Center Park with the “Big Splash” interactive fountain (Gwinnett County’s largest with 43 jets), George Pierce Park (304 acres), and over 4 miles of the Suwanee Creek Greenway. The Atlanta Falcons practiced in Suwanee from 1979 to 2001 before relocating to Flowery Branch.
