History: The area known as Vinings was originally called Crossroads and then Paces around 1830, named for Hardy Pace who ran a ferry across the Chattahoochee River and amassed thousands of acres between present-day Buckhead and Smyrna. In 1839, the Western & Atlantic Railroad laid track between Chattanooga and Atlanta, and Vinings became a construction hub for the railroad. The community was eventually named after William H. Vining, who worked on building “Vining’s Bridge” for the railroad tracks in the 1840s. In 1874, during Reconstruction, the Western & Atlantic Railroad built an open-air pavilion at Vinings that became a popular day-trip destination for Atlantans, who would disembark at Vining’s Station for picnics, concerts, and dancing. The Old Pavilion was saved from demolition in 1996.

Community: Vinings remains unincorporated today, with residents evenly split on incorporation and the idea shelved due to concerns about potential property tax increases. The community features a median household income of $91,308 and is home to The Home Depot corporate headquarters.
